Go beyond ‘The medicine told me…’

Literally every medicine path person I have ever met has at some point or another uttered this phrase, or something like it. We all do it. We all say it. We all believe it. The medicines talk to us. Show us. Illuminate us, teach us, and straight up tell us lots of things that feel true and real and sometimes even uncanny. Like Spirit is speaking to us directly through these plants.

That is true and beautiful and important. But it’s only a small little sliver of the bigger picture of what it actually means to receive a message from the medicine.

What does it mean when you say, “The medicine told me…?”

I started contemplating this because I wanted to understand how we are relating to the medicine and the spiritual path as a whole. And what I found out was that many people are receiving visions, downloads, and revelations inside their journeys and taking them as FACTS. No questioning. No trying it on… is this true for me? No walking with it, testing it out, using your power of agency and discernment. No waiting or riding the wave of unfolding.

Psychedelic means ‘soul revealing’. We take ceremony with psychedelics to see deeper into ourselves. To know. We are going in.

They are simply a mirror, showing you YOU. A portal. A door. All your journeys are experiences of the infinite through the lens of you. So when you take these plants and decide they are giving you an immovable message from on high, you’re creating a hierarchy outside yourself, and you are still separating yourself from consciousness and All That Is. You are still inside the box that tells you that God is outside you giving you tidbits and you are somehow separate.

What if, instead, you believed that a message from the medicine is a seed? An invitation. An idea that wants to experience growth and expansion inside you, with you. What if you are not a patient taking a pill and waiting for miraculous healing, and instead are an alive collaborative force creating healing in yourself with the spirit and wisdom of the medicine?

This is the way we walk with the medicine. In right relationship. Collaboration. Evolution. Not as passive receivers, but as fertile garden beds that can grow anything we dream of.

Messages come in when you’re ready, and they give you what you need to know at the time. The seeds get planted, and they germinate. They unfurl. They crack open and stretch and dance and move. They change. In fact, they can change so much that you may not recognize that the seed and the tree are one in the same.

Integration is about walking with the wisdom you receive. Owning it in your body. Your heart. Letting what is alive in you mix and pollinate and breed with what Spirit is sending in through medicine, Nature, meditation, relationships, work, and more. It’s about making room for everything to be in flow. Inviting structure, and breaking out of the structure. Wildness and realism.

So ponder this… is there something the medicine told you that needs some breathing room? Are you holding on tight to a seed that wants to be a tree? Can you let it? If so, what do you need to do to soften and allow the messages from the medicine to be conversation instead of a commandment?
