🪶Ceremony is Sacred Science

What do you think of when you hear the word ceremony?

Perhaps fond memories of your wedding, college graduation, or Bet Mitzvah. The truth is, we don’t really have much real connection to ceremonial experiences in modern life outside a few special occasions. We know ceremony is a vaguely formal occasion where we should dress nice and behave ourselves. But outside religious and institutional occurrences, most of us don’t have any kind of personal relationship with ceremony whatsoever.

There is a barrier there. A mystery. It’s probably something you may have never even thought much about.

When I started looking for healing and decided to work with plant medicine, I knew SOMETHING was wrong. I knew I was missing some color from my life. That I had lost or forgotten some deep integral truth.

I felt the call to the medicine. I needed help. I wasn’t really thinking about the pomp and circumstance that was going to go with it. But, I knew that I needed it to be a big fucking deal, because I was so lost, broken, and sad. I wanted to offer myself one last heroic grand gesture before I gave up on myself for good.

As I was beginning to research this whole psychedelic thing, ceremony popped it’s majestic, ancient science into my mind and just wouldn’t go away. The more I learned about it, the more I knew that was the way I wanted and NEEDED to receive medicine. I mean, I was flying all the way to South America, I might as well do it up, right?

I like to make a big deal out of things.

I could feel the tug on my heart (this thing I had called intuition that I didn’t know how to use at all.) I just knew it felt like a cool add-on to this kind of scary and weird and kinda crazy thing I was going to go do in Ecuador. I made the decision, booked a retreat, and then didn’t think much more about it.

And that is how ceremony became the most important, transformative experience I had no idea I was missing in my life.

My first plant medicine retreat was 12 days in the Andes mountains. We did 6 medicine ceremonies, each one offering me a deeper glimpse into a worldview and way of life that would alter the course of my path forever. Inside the sacred ceremonial container, I was offered a new paradigm. What felt like a radically different way of thinking. A fresh and surprising collection of teachings and understandings that shot through me like seven arrows.

And the weirdest part was it didn’t feel like something that I had never known before. It felt like remembering. It felt like YES. It felt like THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR. It felt like coming home. It felt like being received into the human family that I had always wanted.

There are a lot of ways you can work with psychedelics. From a clinical session with a therapist to a solo trip out in nature to journeying with friends as part of a full moon ritual to going to a full immersion retreat in the Amazon and everything in between. And while all paths are valid, all experiences are powerful, and all the ways are good ways – there is nothing more powerful, potent, and catalytic for deep, lasting change than ceremonial medicine containers. When you decide to gift yourself the opportunity to experience and remember the ancient technology and sacred science of ceremony, you are increasing the likelihood that you will get the results you want from working with medicine. I say this a lot, but If I had to choose between medicine on its own and ceremony, like I could only have one forever, I would choose ceremony NO CONTEST.

Healing is amplified in community. When you are witnessed, held, and trust your fellow seekers to walk alongside you. When you open your heart and soul to experience the dance of medicine and music (because which is which, am I right?) When you allow yourself to walk into a sacred circle and come into relationship with the elemental essence of life. Water, air, earth, and fire.

You come home to your truest, most elemental self.

There is nothing more beautiful or powerful. Ceremony belongs to you. It belongs to everyone. Humans developed this technology over thousands of years in line with the best understandings of medicine carriers over generations. And it is a technology, just like we think of computers and lasers and AI as cutting edge. This is organic edge. Mystical and practical. It’s a portal where literal magic is created.
